Yes, you read that right; there is a building in Toronto officially called The Magic Building.
But what makes the building so special? Well for one, there’s a witch watching the main entrance from her post in its pediment. The door is also flanked on either side by two rather severe looking male busts that some have compared to Metallica’s James Hetfield. They definitely give Severus Snape a run for his money in the Death Glare department.
But what really seals the magical deal is the mural on the north-east side of the of the building. Created by one of PATO’s favourite artists, Elicser Elliot creates a magical scene of wizards, crystal balls, mediums and kings. What is interesting about this piece and isn’t typical of murals in Toronto is that Elicser uses the corner of the building and incorporates both the east and north face into the image. It’s unusual and I’m sure quite technically challenging to paint.

This appears to be one of Elicser’s first murals. I can’t find any record of it anywhere on his or any other website. I’m going to guess it was painted sometime between 2010 and 2012. What I am certain of is that the name of the building predates the mural, so the owners definitely doesn’t take their cue from Elicser’s work.
There’s not a lot of history on the web about the installation or the building itself, which is too bad. If it’s named The Magic Building, there has to be a reason for it. Anyone know what that might be? Let me know.
