TMB-mapCorktown hasn’t always been one of Toronto’s marquee neighbourhoods. Established in the early 1800’s by Irish immigrants, it was known for poverty so crushing that Toronto Public Health took to documenting conditions among the residents.  The area has undergone a revival in recent years as gentrification has taken hold. What were once depressing slums have now been transformed into glowing examples of 19th-century row-houses.

Other notable improvements to the area include the numerous public art installations in the area including the Frozen Moments located under the Richmond and Adelaide Streets overpass and Underpass park. There is another installation that hasn’t attracted as much attention though and that’s too bad because it certainly casts a spell on the area.

I’m talking about the mural located at 60 Sumach street, otherwise known as The Magic Building.
